Ann Chaitovitz Appointed Executive Director of
Future of Music CoalitionA proven leader in musician and public policy issues, Chaitovitz replaces founding Executive Director Jenny Toomey
WASHINGTON DC – Future of Music Coalition (FMC) is pleased to announce that Ann Chaitovitz has been named its next Executive Director. Chaitovitz replaces Jenny Toomey, who was recently appointed Program Officer for Media and Cultural Policy at the Ford Foundation. Chaitovitz brings more than 15 years of experience in artist rights, copyright and new media technologies to her new role at FMC, which she will assume on February 4, 2008.
"I have worked with FMC for years and am very impressed with the work it has done to ensure that artists’ voices are represented in policy and new media debates," says Chaitovitz. "Jenny Toomey guided FMC into a lean, mean fighting machine that has had true impact on the lives of musicians and the ways in which policy makers look at artist and media issues. These will be big shoes to fill. The excitement I have for these issues and commitment I have to FMC makes me believe that we can ensure the future brings a healthy music industry, where citizens can access more music in more ways and where artists are fairly compensated."
"Ann Chaitovitz is one of the strongest and most dedicated advocates that musicians have in the field," says Toomey. "During her tenure at ASCAP, AFTRA and her many years on our advisory board, Ann has been a confidant, collaborator, legal advisor and friend. Much of FMC’s best work on major label contract reform, copyright and radio issues is covered with her invisible fingerprints. Over the past few years, we racked our brains trying to figure out a way to bring her to FMC. It is bittersweet to be leaving as she is arriving, but it’s also very comforting. With Ann at the helm, FMC will help musicians achieve the equitable structures they deserve." Toomey will actively participate in the transition to new leadership.
Chaitovitz’s background makes her uniquely qualified to lead FMC as it continues to conduct its work at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy. A graduate of New York University School of Law, Chaitovitz most recently worked at the Office of International Relations at the US Patent and Trademark Office as a copyright expert. There, she helped formulate US Government positions on domestic and international copyright matters and was a member of the US delegation to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Previously, Chaitovitz was the National Director of Sound Recordings for the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), where she managed all national and international copyright and recording artist issues. She has served on the Boards of SoundExchange and the Alliance of Artists and Record Companies and was in Leadership Music’s class of 2004. Her comprehensive history of coalition building and strategic planning will ensure that FMC continues to be a trusted voice in all discussions regarding current and future music frameworks.
Chaitovitz was approved by unanimous decision by FMC’s Board of Directors. FMC Policy Director Michael Bracy, who recently assumed the Board of Directors Chair, believes Chaitovitz is the right person to take FMC forward. "Ann’s commitment to artist rights and her thorough knowledge of key issues in music, law, technology and policy are exactly what’s needed at FMC," Bracy says. "It’s been a pleasure to work with Ann in the past, and we’re thrilled to have her expertise and leadership as we move into the future."
There have also been changes to FMC’s Board of Directors. Michael Bracy was appointed Board Chair, and music industry entrepreneur Bryan Calhoun of Label Management Systems was unanimously approved as the newest board member.
