OK Go and Bonerama Rocked DC for New Orleans Musicians

FMC's "Rock the Net" campaign for net neutrality
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Hot on the heels of the release of a collaborative digital EP, irrepressible pop-rockers OK Go and funky New Orleans brass act Bonerama joined forces for a sold-out performance at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Saturday, February 2. The bands — who originally met at Future of Music Coalition’s annual Artist Activism Camp in New Orleans — played energetic sets to raise over $8,000 for New Orleans musicians, including Mardi Gras hero Al “Carnival Time” Johnson and Sweet Home New Orleans.
"I really fell in love with the city and had my faith in music revived," OK Go frontman Damian Kulash recently told the Washington Post Express. "There are really no other places in America where music is the same as it is in New Orleans.”
OK Go and Bonerama’s new EP, You’re Not Alone, will be available exclusively on iTunes on Tuesday, February 5. All proceeds from the collaboration will go to benefit musicians like Al “Carnival Time” Johnson, who lost his home and possessions in Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans’ cultural ambassadors are receiving much-needed assistance through the efforts of groups like Sweet Home New Orleans — an organization offering housing and rental assistance to the city’s displaced musicians — and those musicians who attended FMC’s recent Artist Activism Camp, including Kimya Dawson (of Juno soundtrack fame), Charles Bissell of the Wrens, Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket, Nellie McKay and more.
As members of FMC’s ongoing Rock the Net campaign, OK Go and Bonerama are also doing their part to raise awareness about the importance of net neutrality to musicians. Net neutrality is the idea that all websites and services should be equally accessible on the Internet. Some Internet service providers have proposed charging a fee to Internet content providers to make their sites load faster. Net neutrality advocates believe such a move could make it harder for fans to access the vibrant array of musical offerings now available through legitimate online stores and services.
FMC has plans for more Rock the Net events in 2008, including an upcoming teleconference to coincide with San Francisco’s annual Noise Pop Festival, February 26 – March 2, 2008.
