Washington, DC— Future of Music Coalition (FMC) is pleased to announce Lissa Rosenthal as its next Executive Director. Rosenthal brings extensive experience in arts advocacy, public relations and nonprofit development to her new role at FMC, which she will assume on May 1, 2010.
Rosenthal previously served as Programs Director for the American Council for the Arts (presently Americans for the Arts), where she spearheaded national Arts Advocacy Day and the Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy. As Development Director of P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center — an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City — Rosenthal led fundraising and community outreach initiatives for the internationally renowned institution, produced its highly acclaimed Warm Up music series and played a vital role in the historic merger with MoMA.
During her tenure as National Program Director for PAX: Real Solutions to Gun Violence, Rosenthal directed its two highly acclaimed national public health campaigns dedicated to reducing youth gun violence in America (ASK and SPEAK UP). She has also worked extensively in AIDS fundraising and event production, raising millions of dollars and awareness for AIDS service organizations nationwide. Her new role at FMC will give her the opportunity to merge her professional talents with a lifelong affinity for music.
“Music has always been incredibly important to me, and I know I’m in great company,” Rosenthal said. “Music touches our lives everyday, and we need to look out for the artists who create it. FMC has been instrumental in helping musicians have a voice on the issues, and I look forward to building on their amazing work.”
Former Interim Executive Director Jean Cook has been named Director of Programs for FMC, and will oversee FMC’s work at the intersection of policy, education and research.
“This is an exciting chapter in FMC’s history,” Cook said. There’s a lot happening with policies that affect artists, as well as significant shifts in the economy and music business models. I look forward to working with Lissa as she applies her considerable talents and energies to our work in helping musicians stay informed and empowered.”
Rosenthal was approved by unanimous decision by FMC’s Board of Directors. Policy Director and Board President Michael Bracy is enthusiastic about Rosenthal’s appointment. “Lissa has tremendous respect for what FMC has accomplished in the past decade, and is the perfect person to help us build on our successes and plot a course for the future,” he said.
