Washington, D.C.— With just two weeks until its flagship event, Future of Music Coalition has revealed the latest – and most impressive – list of speakers and programming for its eighth Future of Music Policy Summit, set for October 4-6, 2009 at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
On Monday, October 5, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski will be delivering a keynote address to the audience of musicians, technologists, attorneys and policymakers. Having recently revealed the FCC’s plans to expand principles to preserve open internet structures, the Chairman’s appearance is particularly well timed, and relevant to the prospects of internet-based music business models.
FMC also recently confirmed the appearance of Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA), who will be interviewed by musician/songwriter Nicole Atkins on Tuesday, October 6. This compliments the keynote address by Senator Al Franken (D-MN) on Monday, October 5, who will subsequently participate in a Q&A with Mike Mills, bassist and songwriter for R.E.M.
On Tuesday, attendees will also hear from Daniel Ek of Spotify — a potentially game-changing music service that’s already taken Europe by storm and is gearing up for launch in the United States.
Ek will be followed by Brian Message of Radiohead’s management team, who will sit down for a chat with WIRED technology and music business correspondent Eliot Van Buskirk about artist empowerment in the digital landscape.
FMC is also announcing an all-star concert arranged specifically for Policy Summit attendees and supporters on the evening of Monday, October 5. “Musicians Bringing Musicians Home” presents New Orleans brass sensations Bonerama, with special appearances by Erin McKeown, Wayne Kramer of MC5 and Martín Perna of Ocote Soul Sounds/Antibalas (plus special guests). The concert is part of a series of shows that FMC and partner organization Air Traffic Control (ATC) produces in New Orleans as part of their ongoing commitment to support the music community post-Katrina. Proceeds benefit Sweet Home New Orleans — a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing targeted financial assistance and resources to New Orleans’ cultural ambassadors.
